Life Beyond a Historic Gold Mine
The Challenge
Two small Colorado mountain towns share more than a century of gold mining history, and the mine that anchors their economy today, like every mine, will one day close. These are proud communities with real assets: historic main streets, mountain trails, and stories found nowhere else. The question was how to start building on those strengths now, on the communities' own terms.
What Gather Innovation Did
Supported a community-led economic diversification effort in which residents chose the projects worth exploring. Developed full business cases for three community-selected projects in heritage tourism, historic preservation, and outdoor recreation, giving local leaders and their partners a solid foundation for deciding what to pursue next.
Why It Matters
Too often, planning for a mine's eventual closure starts too late, or happens to a community rather than with it. This work starts early and starts local, laying the groundwork for assets and enterprises the towns themselves would own, built to serve residents long after the mine's final shift.
